How is the Bible structured

The Bible is in two parts:

  • the Old Testament and

  • the New Testament

Each section is made up of different numbers of books of the Bible. Some books are huge, some are just one page long. They are written in different styles, some are poems and others are history.

With some books, there are more than one with the same name, and these are distinguished by a number in front of the book name e.g:

  • 1 Corinthians

  • 2 Corinthians

Each book of the Bible is broken down into numbered chapters. Some books only have one chapter and so don’t have a chapter number.

Finally, the chapters are split into individual numbered verses.

To find your way around the Bible we use Bible references - for example:

  • Exodus 3 means - The book of Exodus, chapter 3 (the whole chapter)

  • John 3:16 means - The book of John, chapter 3, verse 16

  • Genesis 1:1-17 means - The book of Genesis, chapter 1, verses 1 to 17

  • James 4:13,15; 5:6 means - The book of James, chapter 4, verse13, verse 15, and chapter 5, verse 6

  • 2 Kings 2:23 - 3:12 means - the second book of Kings, chapter 2, verse 23 through to chapter 3, verse 12
